Those without a strong, healthy community to fall back on end up weaker and unable to fight the outside forces meant to hurt them.
It's this emphasis on community and family that makes this series so good. After all, survival means nothing if you have nothing to survive for. Iktan begins to realize that there is more to life than surviving. Iktan helps Xiala forgive herself for the deaths her Song has caused because it helped her survive, which is the purpose of the power. Their eventual goal is to reach the city of Hokaia but along the way the two start a tentative friendship based on the fact they're outsiders in Golden Eagle. For example, Xiala and Iktan! The two end up traveling together as they both attempt to escape the absolute madhouse that is Tova. That new knowledge comes with some unexpected, yet refreshing new characters and friendships. They're completely separate, interesting cultures and societies that are held together by the very delicate thread that is the Treaty of Hokaia. So much of Black Sun centered on Tova, so it was easy to forget how to separate all the various communities in the Miridian from each other. It was nice to see more of the Mirdian outside of Tova and its drama. As for Xiala, she's just trying to survive.Īs a second book, Fevered Star certainly ranks at the top of my list. Now she has to attempt to learn about her new powers before she eventually is discovered by said Crow God. Of course, he failed thanks to the fact the true Sun Priest Nara, was in hiding. Picking up where the first book left off, we get to see the impact of the chaos Serapio wrought in Tova during the Solar Eclipse, an event that led to him being possessed by the Crow God and attempting to kill the Sun Priest. Fevered Star is the second book in the Rebecca Roanhorse's Between Earth and Sky series and the one I've been impatiently waiting for since I read Black Sun last year.
